Four Oaks Named After Unusual Tree Story
For anyone who doesn’t know already, Four Oaks, North Carolina was founded in 1889 by Colonel R.R. Bridgers, President of the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad. He named the town of Four Oaks after a stump that had four oak trees growing from it. Hunter, Aaron Wallace, had cut that oak tree down to catch a possum, and from its stump, four oak trees grew, inspiring the town’s name.
Four Oaks is also home to a variety of other oak species, including the scarlet oak, blackjack oak, and willow oak, adding to its rich natural landscape.
